Counselling Therapy with Michele Theoret - Empowered U

Michele Theoret

Registered Psychologist; B.Sc. Exercise Sciences; MA Counselling Psychology; Certified Yoga Therapist; Experienced Registered Yoga Teacher; Advanced EMDR Clinician; Integrated Somatic Therapist; Psychedelic Assisted Therapy;

In my work as a clinical psychologist my focus is on creating safe trauma-informed spaces that meets each individual client where they are. I encourage a compassionate curiosity about the present “what are noticing in your body”, “where do you feel stuck right now” “what circumstances, events, or histories have contributed to the present issues”, and “what else might be possible in the future”

I take a holistic approach informed through an understanding that the intersections of environment, history, culture, past experiences and events, beliefs, feelings, emotions, and physiology all have an impact on a person’s nervous system and identity or how they show up in the world.

I support clients struggling with issues related to chronic stress, trauma (PTSD and Complex C-PTSD), sports performance issues (RSPP), anxiety, burnout, life transitions, grief, parenting, relationships, and chronic illness/pain.

 I utilize a variety of therapeutic modalities including mindfulness/yoga, Heartmath, integrated somatic techniques, compassion-focused therapy, EMDR therapy, IFS-Parts work, attachment focused therapy, Psychedelic Assisted Therapy (offering at Cena Life in Edmonton, Alberta ), and Gottman couples therapy, in order to support individuals in being more connected, current, curious, compassionate, confident, and creative in their relationship with themselves and the world.

Inspired through education and experience with yoga, mindfulness, martial arts, strength and conditioning, peak performance, and psychology, I encourage a compassionate curiosity about past experiences (and the stories we tell ourselves about them), present challenges, and future possibilities.

Through my experiences with competitive martial arts, working with athletes as a strength and conditioning coach, and body-building I gained invaluable insight into the power of deliberate practice, consistency, persistence and discipline. When you think you are at your limit can you drop into your body..”10 more sec” “just one more rep” “one step at a time” “this the worst you will ever feel” “I got this”

Through yoga, an embodied understanding of an interconnected, integrated, and a more expansive self that is serene despite current moods, fears, and limiting narratives; A connection to a higher self, purpose, or source that is bigger than this.

Through studies in exercises sciences, neuroscience, and psychology I have discovered the brilliant capacity, adaptability, intelligence, and resilience of the human body and experience.

“Years as a healer and trauma therapist have taught me that trauma isn’t destiny. The body, not the thinking brain, is where we experience most of our pain, pleasure, and joy, and where we process most of what happens to us. It is also where we do most of our healing, including our emotional and psychological healing. And it is where we experience resilience and a sense of flow.”-Resmaa Menakem

My offerings shift the narrative from self-improvement and ‘should’ towards care and compassion.

Compassionate curiosity is the birthplace of change allowing us to be with our experience with a courageous presence. Through this courageous presence we can begin to re-process and re-write the stories we tell ourselves about past experiences and the invisible scars that define our sense of self. There is a scientific phenomenon that states “what we observe changes” and simularily even the most subtle shifts in perspective of our past experiences and behaviours may transform how we show up in the present creating a new trajectory and possibilities.

“We cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them…..Imagination is everything”
